Response – 1st March 2024 – An Utterly Broken Visa Regime by Peter-John Pearson
On 27th February 2024, STATS-SA released data with regard to tourism. It stated that “overseas tourists constituted 20.1% (195 423) of all visitors – 48.1% of whom came from the UK (40 517), Germany (31 072) and the US (22 447). The bulk of our visitors come from the SADC region.” The next day the Daily Maverick ran an article analysing the disastrous impact of a recent Directive (21st December 2023) from the Department of Home Affairs ending the practice whereby tourists here on a ninety day visa could renew their visas for a further ninety days while still in the country.
