Family Digest 67 – International Cancer Awareness Day by Lois Law

World Cancer Day is marked on 4th February to raise awareness of the global impact of cancer, to increase understanding of cancer prevention, detection, treatment and care, and to mobilize action to address this global pandemic. The World Health Organization’s (WHO) research has found that 70 per cent of cancer deaths around the world occur in low- and middle-income countries, “where resources required for prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer are limited or non-existent”.1 According to the research platform Statista, cancer in South Africa and Africa in general is a growing public health concern as there is an increasing incidence of the disease and of its mortality rates.2 It is the leading cause of death after TB and HIV.
