Economic Digest 52 – Starlink: Beware of G(r)reeks Bearing Gifts by Kenny Pasensie

The proverb, ‘beware of Greeks bearing gifts’, derived from the story of the Trojan horse in Virgil’s Aeneid, is probably a good way to describe the brouhaha surrounding Starlink’s possible entry into South Africa. Evidence suggests that the technology itself could be a means to bridge the digital divide in rural areas, where connectivity remains a distant dream for many. However, Starlink’s entry is not as straightforward as it could be, and much of that is perhaps due to the ‘geek’ who owns it – Elon Musk.
