Roundtable Discussion on Teacher training and development – towards better teaching held on 13 October 2014

Nick Taylor spoke to research conducted by JET Education Services on curricula for initial teacher training. They sampled 5 universities that produced most of the teachers in SA and the research showed that there was gaps in the curricula for teacher training. Nic Spaull noted that teachers were not able to impart knowledge properly and the content knowledge of the teachers was also lacking. The focus should be on student learning, looking at how we improve and increase the ‘quality’ of what students learn, and the ‘volume’ of what they learn.
