Roundtable discussion on Municipal Viability and Interventions held on 4 September 2015

On the 4th of September 2015, the Catholic Parliamentary Liaison Office (CPLO) hosted a roundtable on municipal viability and intervention. It was chaired by Fr. Matsepane Morare, the speakers consisted of Kevin Mileham, the DA shadow minister for Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs; Ian Palmer, founder of Palmer Development Group (PDG); Johann Mettler, the Municipal Manager of the Drakenstein Municipality and lastly Mr Mandla Nkomfe, advisor to the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs. Each speaker brought the knowledge that they have from their respective positions, thus allowing each section to voice its opinion on the matter of municipal viability and interventions. Issue of corruption, mismanagement of funds, delivery of services, financial viability of municipalities, and interventions in provincial governments, as mandated by section 139 were amongst the many points of discussions. The diverse background of the speakers had made for an engaging question and answer session that became very heated at times.
