The American expression ‘go big or go home’ is an exhortation to go all-out; a philosophy that encourages one to be bold and uncompromising. It is probably an apt expression in describing what President Cyril Ramaphosa will need to do in his State of the Nation Address (SONA) tomorrow. The ‘big’ in this instance is not only in reference to whether or not a basic income grant (BIG) will be announced, but also how ‘big’ the government will go in tackling economic growth and unemployment. On February 10th we will know just how big the president is willing to go.
