Briefing Paper 587 – Harmful Sexual Behaviours in Children by Lois Law

It is widely acknowledged that South Africa has one of the highest rates of sexual crime in the world. Over 35% of children face sexual abuse, with an increasing concern about child-on-child sexual abuse.2 Childline South Africa estimates that 43% of all cases of sexual assault reported to them have been committed by other children under the age of 18. In South Africa our boys are more likely to be sexually abused than our girls.3 A recent national summit on Harmful Sexual Behaviours of Children (HSB) was held to gather further information on this issue and to develop strategies targeting child-on-child sexual abuse, thus creating safer spaces for all children.4
